It took even more than 20 years to completely build Phat Diem stone cathedral, lasting from 1895 to 1899. The time for building this church had numerous difficulties with almost all rudimentary working means.
Only mentioning the preparation period of making stone materials, it took local people about 10 years to extract stone from surrounding limestone mountains. The stone could be taken from nearby province such as Thanh Hoa, Nghe An with a huge quantity and weight of 7 tons.

Phat Diem Cathedral is a complex including lots of features such as a lake, a cathedral, a stone church, Phuong Dinh (bell house) and three artificial grottoes. At first glance, visitors can easily find the square lake on the main road to the cathedral attractive with its beauty and position.
